Every year in the first week of December, a category of service call appears and then disappears again by January. Somebody has put up holiday lighting and something has started tripping.
The usual diagnosis is that the display is too big. Sometimes it is. Often it is not, and the trip is reporting something that was already wrong and only now has enough load on it to show.
Why exterior circuits are the ones affected
Exterior receptacles are the most exposed wiring in a house. They sit in weather, they are often on the oldest circuits, and in Wichita’s older housing across Delano, Riverside and the pre-war neighbourhoods they are frequently ungrounded or fed by long runs from the interior.
They are also the receptacles least used the rest of the year, which means a developing fault can sit unnoticed for eleven months.
The load arithmetic, honestly
Modern LED lighting has changed this conversation completely. A string of LED lights draws a small fraction of what an equivalent incandescent string did.
A large LED display that would have overwhelmed a circuit fifteen years ago now sits comfortably within it. If you have replaced your lighting since then and are still tripping, load is probably not the cause.
Inflatable decorations are the exception worth noting. Each contains a continuously running blower motor, and several of them together represent a real load with real starting current.
What the trip is usually telling you
A GFCI trip on an exterior circuit in December is most often moisture. Water in a receptacle, water in a connection between two light strings, or water in a damaged cord.
That is the device doing its job. The correct response is finding the wet connection, not resetting repeatedly or moving to a different outlet.
A breaker trip rather than a GFCI trip points elsewhere: genuine overload, or a fault in the fixed wiring that a heavier load has finally revealed.
An AFCI trip on an interior circuit feeding an exterior receptacle suggests arcing, which in an outdoor context frequently means a damaged cord or a corroded connection.
The connections that cause it
Where two light strings join, where a string plugs into an extension cord, and where an extension cord plugs into the receptacle. All three sit outdoors in Kansas weather.
Elevating connections off the ground, using covers over joined plugs, and running a drip loop so water runs away from rather than into a connection all address this and none of them cost anything.
Cords rated for outdoor use are not the same as indoor cords used outdoors. The jacket material differs and it matters over a Kansas winter.
The in-use cover
Exterior receptacles require covers that close over a plugged-in cord, not merely over an empty outlet.
Older Wichita houses commonly have the flip-up type designed to close only when nothing is plugged in, which during a two-month lighting display means an open receptacle in weather for two months.
Replacing an exterior cover with an in-use type is inexpensive, is a device-level job, and is the single most useful thing to do before hanging anything.
The timer and control layer
Mechanical timers outlast smart controls in this application, principally because a wireless signal reaching an outdoor receptacle in a Kansas December is less reliable than a mechanism.
Where smart control is wanted, keeping the controller indoors and switching an outdoor circuit works better than putting the device outside.
The permanent solution
Households that decorate every year eventually consider a dedicated exterior circuit, and it is a reasonable thing to want.
A dedicated GFCI-protected circuit with in-use covered receptacles positioned where the display actually goes, switched from inside, removes the extension cords entirely. It is a modest job and it is best done during other work rather than in November.
Permits for a new exterior circuit run through the Metro Area Building and Construction Department at (316) 660-1840 for Wichita and the unincorporated parts of Sedgwick County, inspected against the currently adopted code edition.
What the December call should actually produce
If a circuit trips under holiday load and it has never tripped before, the useful outcome is not a bigger breaker. It is finding out why.
Having emergency electrician in Wichita check the exterior receptacles and the circuit feeding them, rather than simply resetting, occasionally turns up a fault that was going to cause trouble in the spring anyway. A seasonal load is a free load test on the least-inspected circuits in the house.
The one thing not to do
Do not replace a tripping breaker with a larger one to get through the season. The conductor in the wall did not get bigger, and the circuit is now protected by something that will not open until well past what that wire can carry.
